More than 400 athletes from 16 countries are coming to the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre in Belleville in May 2016 for the World U19 Women’s Floorball Championship.
The International Floorball Federation announced on Tuesday that Belleville will host the event after it was selected during the IFF Central Board meeting this past weekend in Germany. Switzerland also made a bid to host the event.
This is the first time an IFF championship will be held in North America.
“We are extremely excited and honoured to have been selected,” said Belleville Bid Committee Chair Brett Davis. “We were up late on Saturday night to hear the announcement and still can’t believe that we got it.”
Davis and Todd Crawford organized the bid application and the City hosted an official delegation from Sweden in February, who toured the Quinte Sports & Wellness Centre.
“You have to imagine, we are against Switzerland for this event, and we felt really great about our chances when the organizers left,” said Bay of Quinte Tourism President, Ryan Williams. “This could be great news for the region come 2016, and we look forward to a positive announcement.”
Floorball is a fast-paced, exciting, safe and low-cost type of indoor hockey. At first glance, it resembles floor hockey or ball hockey but is played with specialized light-weight fibre glass or carbon fibre sticks and rules that promote safety and skill. It is played all over the world and is extremely popular in Europe.
The economic spinoff for the region from this event is expected to be in excess of $1.2 million.
